Hungarian arrested for vandalising temple

A 30-year-old Hungarian man was arrested in Malta after he was caught carving numbers into the wall of Ggantija, the world’s oldest free-standing human-built structure.

A witness alerted police, who detained the man.

Ggantija, located on the Maltese island of Gozo, is a Stone Age megalithic twin temple complex dating back to around 2,500-3,600 BCE.

The Unesco-listed coral limestone complex is the second oldest known religious structure after Göbleki Tepe in eastern Turkey.

This is not the first act of vandalism at the site. An Italian student was fined €15,000 in 2023 and given a two-year prison sentence, suspended for four years, after admitting to damaging the temple.
