Village mayor shot in his office

The mayor of Nagytevel, a village in Veszprém county, was shot with a gas pistol on Tuesday morning in the local government office, authorities confirmed.

Veszprém county police said a 76-year-old man from the Pápa area shot mayor Sándor Orbán inside the municipal building, which also houses the local kindergarten.

Police said the suspect had previously suffered from delusions and had visited the mayor several times before the attack.

He fired three shots at close range, injuring the mayor in the head and chest.

Orbán sustained severe injuries and was airlifted by helicopter to a hospital in Győr.

The suspect was apprehended at the scene and taken into custody.

At the time of the shooting, around 20 young children were in the kindergarten nearby.

Although they were not physically harmed, they were frightened by the gunshots, and teachers told them to leave the building through windows as a precaution.

Péter Magyar, leader of the Tisza Party, commented on the incident, citing information from the party’s local parliamentary candidate.

He noted that one municipal employee restrained the attacker until police arrived and that the motive for the attack remains unknown.

Magyar called on Interior Minister Sándor Pintér to fully disclose the details of the case and to take steps to ensure public safety, stressing that no public official or citizen should live in fear of such attacks.
