Győr mayor looks into missing funds

Bence Pintér, Győr’s independent mayor, announced that he is initiating the dissolution of the city council, arguing that what has come to light about the management of municipal assets is unacceptable.

In a Facebook post, Pintér said the council majority had misled residents about its intentions regarding the city’s property and finances, and that voters should be given the chance to decide through new elections.

According to Pintér, financial reports show that nearly the entire municipal housing fund managed by city-owned investment company Győr-Szol disappeared between January and September 2025, amounting to at least Ft 1.7 billion.

He said this raises suspicions of large-scale embezzlement and breach of trust.

Pintér recalled that last December a proposal by opposition councillor Renáta Balog-Farkas to demand detailed financial documents from Győr-Szol was rejected by the Fidesz majority on the committee.

He has since filed a criminal complaint with the county prosecutor’s office.

The mayor said the city’s operations must be reorganised and the damage mitigated, but insisted this requires the removal of “lying politicians” from decision-making.
