Pesticide residue found in apples

Pesticide Action Network Europe and the Hungarian Association of Nature Conservators have tested 59 apple samples from 13 countries, including Hungary, and found that multiple pesticide residues were present in almost all conventionally grown fruit.

All Hungarian samples contained at least one PFAS pesticide, so-called “forever chemicals” that persist in the environment, the study found.

In one case, residue levels of an insecticide exceeded permitted limits.

Neurotoxic pesticides were detected in 60% of the Hungarian apples tested.

The Association of Nature Conservators warned that, if these apples were processed into baby food, they would fail to meet regulatory standards.

The authors of the report advise parents to opt for organic apples rather than relying on peeling to reduce exposure, arguing that residues are often present beneath the skin of the fruit as well.
