Self-driving taxis may be on streets this year

Autonomous taxis could appear on the streets of Budapest as early as this year, according to László Palkovics, government commissioner for artificial intelligence, speaking on InfoRádió about the state of the automotive industry.

As part of the project, the Zalazone automotive test track will adopt a cloud-based system developed by Israel’s Mobileye and deploy two vehicles equipped with level-four autonomous functions. The cars are expected to be integrated into the fleet of Főtaxi and its partner Uber, allowing them to be tested in real urban traffic.

Palkovics argued that countries capable of manufacturing cars are also well placed to develop robots, suggesting that Hungary, despite its size, could achieve international success in this field.

He stressed that the focus is on civilian applications, including support for firefighting, assistance in healthcare, and everyday care for the elderly, rather than military uses.
