District cracks down on Airbnb rentals

Local authorities began inspections after a ban on short-term rentals came into force on January 1 in Budapest’s Sixth District, the local council announced on Facebook.
Operators of illegal accommodation may face fines of several million forints.
Inspections are being carried out jointly with the police and the National Tax and Customs Administration.
According to the district, warning notices reading “Prohibited activity” and stating that official proceedings have been launched have been posted at the entrances of illegal rentals.
The ban, adopted after a vote by local residents, prohibits Airbnb-style short-term rentals from January 1, 2026.
Although the Budapest government office had urged the district to withdraw the measure in 2025, mayor Tamás Soproni refused, and the Supreme Court later ruled that the ban was lawful.
