Farmers to protest new EU subsidy rules

More than 100 participants will leave Hungary for Brussels this week to take part in Thursday’s all-European farmers’ demonstration, the National Agricultural Chamber and the Federation of Hungarian Farmers’ Circles and Co-operatives said on Monday.

The organisers expect participants from all EU member states, nearly 10,000 people.

The protest rally was initiated by European farmers group Copa-Cogeca in response to a European Commission proposal published in July that would reduce agricultural subsidies by more than 20% in the 2028-34 EU budget cycle, and abolish the Common Agricultural Policy.

A statement said the European Commission plans to reach a decision without making thorough preparations, without holding consultations and without drafting feasibility studies, placing EU farmers at a disadvantage.

The interest representations also demand that the Commission should not conclude commercial agreements with countries outside the EU that jeopardise European agricultural producers and constitute food safety risks.
