Authorities clamp down on hazardous shipments

The consumer protection authority NKFH and the tax authority NAV recently inspected 500 packages ordered online from third countries at Budapest Airport and found that 60% were unsafe, according to a joint statement.
The list of items included toys, cosmetics, textiles, Christmas decorations, and electric devices such as battery chargers.
The inspection, part of the government’s seven-point consumer protection plan, aims to prevent dangerous products from reaching Hungarian and EU consumers.
Authorities stressed that holiday online shopping increases risks and that long-term border monitoring ensures both safety and market fairness.
Online purchases from third countries in Hungary have risen sharply, with 2024 turnover reaching Ft 493 billion.
International e-commerce sales grew by 80% last year and 28% in the first half of 2025, while turnover at domestic webshops expanded by around 10%.
The NAV expects to handle 190 million packages of shipments with a value below €150, up 40% from 2024.
Authorities warn that the growing volume of goods from abroad requires decisive regulatory measures.
