First concrete pour at Paks set for February

The expansion of the Paks nuclear power plant will reach a new milestone on February 5 with the first concrete pour, which will render the project physically irreversible, Foreign Ministry state secretary Levente Magyar said on site on Tuesday.
Preparatory work is currently underway, including the installation of a level concrete layer to provide a clean, uniform foundation for subsequent construction. Magyar added that construction will accelerate in the coming period to ensure the timely delivery of Hungary’s largest-ever investment.
The project remains a genuinely international effort involving American, French, German and Australian companies alongside the Russian main contractor, despite the unfavourable environment, he said.
Magyar asserted that adding nuclear power capacity is the only way for Hungary to generate large volumes of energy safely, cost-effectively and in a climate-friendly way, which is why the government decided to double the capacity of Paks.
