Caterer responds to mass illness in 13th District

Nearly 470 people, including hundreds of children, fell ill in Budapest’s 13th District after eating lunches supplied by a catering company.

According to the National Public Health and Medical Centre (NNGYK), 47 of the affected required hospital treatment with symptoms of vomiting, diarrhoea, and dehydration.

Investigations have been launched by the NNGYK, the food chain safety office Nébih, and the Budapest Government Office.

Authorities have suspended the operation of the affected kitchen, ordered immediate disinfection, and sent food samples for urgent testing.

The inspections include food preparation technology, storage, transportation and hygiene practices.

The catering service for the district’s kindergartens and schools was contracted this spring to three companies, Diák és Munkahelyi Vendéglátó, Kinder F. és K. Vendéglátó, and Korona Cupola, following a public procurement process.

The agreement, worth around Ft 6.6 billion, runs for 22 months and may be extended by two more years.

The 13th District said it immediately informed authorities after receiving reports from parents and is maintaining close contact with public health officials.
