Three-way talks resume on 3-year wage agreement

Representatives of employers, trade unions and the government have reopened talks on the three-year wage agreement signed last year after last week’s weaker-than-expected GDP figures, Portfolio writes.

Union leader Imre Palkovics confirmed that the 13% increase laid out in the agreement last November will not be implemented due to slower growth and that parties are close to a compromise.

Union officials stressed that wage growth must still ensure a real wage increase next year.

President László Perlusz of employees association VOSZ said wages have risen by more than 20% over the past two years with inflation around 9%, while GDP expanded by only 1% in the same period.

He warned that the pace of wage growth is becoming unsustainable, eroding company reserves and weighing on business prospects.

Employers and unions are now consulting their respective bodies before a final decision is made at the next cabinet meeting.
