Gov’t plans rail link, new terminal at airport

The government is planning a €2.5 billion development project around Liszt Ferenc International Airport, Economy Minister Márton Nagy and Construction and Transport Minister János Lázár announced at a press conference at the airport on Monday.

The project includes €1 billion for a 27km railway link to the city, €1 billion for a third terminal, and €500 million for road construction.

The railway development and its operation will be offered under a concession scheme.

The government is considering participation in the concession company, though Nagy noted that this would probably be as a minority shareholder.

Upon the concession’s expiry, the railway track will revert to state ownership.

Construction of the new terminal is scheduled to begin in March 2026 and is expected to take eight years.

The government estimates that the airport’s capacity could rise to 40 million passengers annually, up from 20 million this year.

The 12km, six-lane access road network could be completed by the end of 2028, while both the third terminal and rail link are slated for completion in 2034 or 2035.

The government also plans to establish an aviation holding company, Aviatikai Holding, which would include the Budapest, Debrecen and Sármellék airports, as well as Hungarocontrol, the national air traffic service provider.
