Lázár’s “new” trains not to arrive before 2029

Despite Minister János Lázár’s triumphant announcement that Hungary will soon have “new motor trains,” the vehicles in question are actually used trains from Switzerland, and they will not begin service until 2029 at the earliest, Telex reports.

According to documents published in the public procurement system, MÁV plans to buy 93 Stadler GTW motor trains from Swiss railway company Thurbo.

However, these trains will only be gradually withdrawn from Swiss service between 2026 and 2034, meaning Hungary’s purchase must follow that timeline. The final delivery deadline is 2035.

The trains will also need extensive technical modifications, as Switzerland uses a different electrical system.

These adjustments, along with the phased withdrawal schedule, will significantly delay the trains’ introduction.

Once refurbished, they are expected to operate mainly on suburban routes in major Hungarian cities.
