Last Hungarian hostage released by Hamas

Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó announced on Monday morning that Omri Mirán, the last Hungarian hostage held by Hamas, had been freed and handed over to the Red Cross.

“After more than two years of hope, the long-awaited news arrived: the last Hungarian hostage has been released from Hamas captivity,” Szijjártó wrote.

He expressed gratitude to US President Donald Trump for helping secure the agreement that made possible the hostages’ release, saying Trump “brought about an agreement that offers the peoples of the Middle East hope for a peaceful, secure life free from terrorism.”

The minister also thanked Qatar and Egypt for their mediation.

The release followed last week’s ceasefire agreement between Hamas and Israel, which began to take effect on Monday with the handover of 20 hostages who had been held since October 2023.
