NAV uncovers SZÉP card cash-out scheme

The tax authority NAV has uncovered a large-scale fraud involving SZÉP card accounts.
In the scam, a private Facebook group with more than 6,000 members promised to convert SZÉP card funds into cash in exchange for a 20% commission.
Auditors in Heves County tracked down the organisers, who were hiding behind a fake profile.
They agreed to carry out a test transaction of Ft 50,000 and arranged a personal meeting, where it was revealed that an accommodation provider acted as the formal beneficiary of the payments, making it possible to identify those behind the scheme.
According to NAV, several people operated the group and split the profits.
Investigators found that the organisers issued nearly 2,000 invoices for fictitious services, collecting a total of Ft 44 million in commissions.
The tax authority stressed that the proceedings are ongoing.
Besides paying the taxes owed on their hidden income, the perpetrators face default fines and penalties for deliberate tax evasion.
