Tesco tests Premier brand

Food retailer Tesco has launched its first Premier store in Hungary, opening the unit in Csepel, Budapest’s 21st District, as part of a pilot project.

The format is based on the British company’s convenience-store network and could mark a strategic shift in how Tesco competes with discount chains in urban markets.

Tesco added that “further expansion options will be decided based on customer feedback and experience.”

In the UK, Tesco Express units are fully owned by the group, small in size and relatively expensive, but marketed around Tesco’s quality promise.

Premier, by contrast, is largely a franchise system supplied by Booker, Tesco’s wholesale arm.

These outlets are typically cheaper, have a more local, family-run feel, and are integrated into their neighbourhoods rather than positioned as premium convenience stores.
