Rail line sacrificed for CATL factory

State railway company MÁV will close the Debrecen-Nagykereki railway line on October 19 to make way for land required by Chinese battery maker CATL, according to transport expert Dávid Vitézy.
A consortium of 13 local governments along the line obtained Ft 500 million in EU funding in 2015 and carried out station renovations with cleaner surroundings and improved bus connections, in one of the regional railway success stories of recent years, Portfolio writes.
Although plans for rerouting were clear as early as 2022, the Transport Ministry has yet to launch the necessary design or construction work for the project, Vitézy noted.
Independently, a union statement schedules the closure for October 13, not October 19 as Vitézy said.
