Household savings falling

Hungarians’ average savings shrank to Ft 1.8 million this year from Ft 2.3 million in 2024, according to the latest Biztos Jövő survey by K&H.

The size of savings varied greatly by location and level of education. In Budapest, average savings stood at Ft 2.3 million, compared to Ft 1.2 million in rural areas.

Among people with the lowest educational level, average savings were just Ft 680,000, in contrast to the Ft 3.5 million held by the most educated.

The survey found that 61% of Hungarians regularly save, down from 67% last year, while 22% said they are unable to save at all.

Voluntary pension funds remain the most popular savings vehicle, but pension insurance policies also continue to expand, with around 520,000 contracts in force nationwide at the end of 2024.

The survey also showed that 77% of Hungarians expect to work after retirement to secure sufficient income, although financial awareness is improving among younger people, most of whom intend to buy property.
