Third District waste collection restarts

Lomtalanítás, the annual collection of large unwanted household waste, resumed in Budapest’s Third District on Saturday, having been interrupted by a wildcat strike on September 24 by employees of waste collection concession holder MOHU, a subsidiary of MOL. Following negotiations between district mayor László Kiss and MOHU, extra collection rounds are scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday for residents who held back their rubbish at the district’s request.
The district said it remained “unacceptable” that MOHU only provided information and took action once the mayor intervened.
The district also criticised the company for shifting blame for the recent “waste tsunami” on to striking workers, arguing that the real failure lay in MOHU’s lack of communication.
The district demands the resignations of the company’s Budapest management.
