Heavy fines for not wearing seat belt

Hungarian police will be imposing heavier fines for those who fail to use seat belts from Thursday.

The fines have been raised to Ft 20,000 within municipalities, Ft 30,000 outside an inhabited area and Ft 40,000 on motorways.

If traffic cameras record a driver or any passengers not using a seat belt, the fine will be sent to the registered owner of the vehicle.

The authorities aim to reduce the number of deadly accidents by half by 2030.

A police safety expert says that annually a large number of people die or sustain severe injuries in traffic accidents for not using seat belts. In 2024 for instance, 92 people died because of this.

Expert Zsolt Berzai said that according to examinations the use of a seat belt reduces the risk of personal injuries and deaths in a car accident by 50-60% on average.

Nine out of ten drivers who were not secured and were thrown out of their vehicles died, he said.
