Sátoraljaújhely sets restrictions on new arrivals

Sátoraljaújhely has drawn up a list of requirements that any would-be new resident of the town in northeast Hungary must satisfy.

Those who wish to relocate to Sátoralja¬újhely, a town of 13,000 people, must have a clean police record, no public debts and high school or medium-level vocational training.

In addition, they must have a life insurance policy or a pension.

Those who wish to buy property in the town must have a command of the Hungarian language, under the decree approved by the local council on Thursday.

Website 444 writes that many apartments in Sátoraljaújhely are owned by Slovaks, which were bought for investment purposes and are rented out.

In a video uploaded to Facebook mayor Péter Szamosvölgyi of the Fidesz party said the aim of the decree is to prevent developments that might threaten community cohesion.
