Ministry looks into airbase theft

The defence minister launched an internal inquiry immediately after the theft carried out at Kecskemét air base in late July, well before media reports appeared, the ministry announced in a Wednesday statement.

Thieves stole components from disused MiG-39 fighter aircraft that were withdrawn from military use in 2010.

The ministry said it is launching disciplinary proceedings following the burglary and theft at Kecskemét airport and that the guarding of the MiG-29 planes stored at the base have been beefed up.

It added that the stolen components cannot be used and have no market value.

The MiGs were replaced with Gripen planes in 2010.
