Highest heat warning issued

HungaroMet’s latest forecast has prompted Hungary’s national chief medical officer to issue a third-degree heat warning, the highest alert level, for the entire country from midnight Thursday to midnight Sunday.

In many areas, the daily average temperature may exceed 27°C, with highs above 35°C during peak hours.

The National Public Health and Medical Officer Service and disaster management authorities warn that such extreme heat poses a health risk to everyone, even those in good physical condition.

Authorities advise avoiding direct sun during the hottest part of the day, staying in shaded or cool areas, and drinking plenty of fluids while avoiding alcohol, caffeine, and high-sugar drinks, which increase the risk of dehydration.

A nationwide ban on fires, in effect since Sunday, prohibits fires in forests or within 200 meters of them, even in designated firepits.

Barbecuing and grilling are permitted only in private gardens, and fires must never be left unattended.

So far this year, 8,106 outdoor fires have been recorded, injuring 55 people and burning 93 million square metres of land.
