Russian human rights activist dies in Hungary

Yevgeny Beljakov, a Russian human rights and opposition activist who had lived in Hungary since 2017, died in early July, Telex reports.

Beljakov had previously faced deportation to Russia, but in January 2023, a Hungarian court overturned the expulsion order issued by the national directorate for immigration.

The court emphasised that returning the activist to Russia would expose him to the risk of inhumane and degrading treatment, particularly in the context of the ongoing war in Ukraine, where critics of the regime are at heightened risk.

Beljakov obtained a degree in history from the Central European University (CEU) and had worked with several human rights organisations across Europe.

He spent time at Human Rights Watch in Moscow and briefly at Novaya Gazeta, where a report he worked on, regarding corruption in Chechnya, was never published due to the sudden disappearance of a key local source.

He returned to Hungary in 2017 amid government pressure on CEU and participated in protests supporting the university.
