Former foreign minister Jeszenszky assaulted

A man attacked former foreign minister Géza Jeszenszky with a hammer on Sunday afternoon, causing a fractured skull but no fatal injuries.

In a letter to Népszava, the former diplomat, now 83 years old, wrote that he and his wife were on their way to their home on Ferenciek tere in downtown Budapest when the incident occurred.

The man also assaulted Jeszenszky’s wife Edit, but a man standing nearby hindered the assailant, so he could not strike with full force.

Jeszenszky and his ally ran after the assailant and others joined the chase. Police were alerted and caught the perpetrator on Fővám tér.

Jeszenszky said the same man attacked him in their courtyard in a similar way two years ago, but the assailant managed to flee.

Surgeons operated on Jeszenszky at the Semmelweis Clinic and he will be kept in hospital for at least a week.
