Hungary could lose all RRF funds

The European Commission is expected to formally announce on June 4 that it will not extend the €650 billion Recovery Fund (RRF) beyond the August 2026 deadline and is urging member states to accelerate the absorption of funds, Brussels website Politico reports.
In that event, Hungary could permanently miss out on €10.4 billion in RRF funding, including €6.5 billion in grants and a further €3.9 billion in preferential loans under the REPowerEU energy package.
These funds remain frozen due to the ongoing rule-of-law conditionality mechanism.
Many countries, including major beneficiaries of the scheme, such as Italy, Spain, Portugal and Poland, had hoped for an extension to access further funding, but the Commission sees no legal basis to unilaterally amend the rules established in 2021.
The EU executive is now working to speed up the fulfilment of milestones and targets to maximise fund absorption before the August 31, 2026 deadline, Portfolio adds.
