Ft 19trn sits idle in cash and deposits

Hungarian households held Ft 19.2 trillion in cash and uncommitted bank deposits in the first quarter of 2025, up 12.4% year-on-year, according to preliminary MNB data.

This figure includes Ft 7.1 trillion in cash and Ft 12.2 trillion in demand deposits.

With a population of 9.54 million, this translates to Ft 2 million per person held in non-interest-bearing or low-yield forms.

Bankmonitor notes that most of these funds earn negligible interest, despite options such as government bonds offering returns near 7%.

As a result, Hungarians potentially missed out on over Ft 1.3 billion in interest income, around Ft 139,000 per capita.
