Far fewer learning foreign languages

The number of those sitting for foreign language examinations plummeted among those over 30 years age from 11,389 in 2015 to 1,170 in 2024, according to data provided by the Education Office Language Accreditation Department.

Those who do not pass a foreign language examination during their high school years will probably never do so, according to the education office.

The number of those passing language tests in 2024 was less than 60,000, less than half of the 130,000 who did so in 2015.

Foreign-language skills are valuable, website Economx writes; those who speak at least one foreign language can earn up to 23% more than others in the same position.

Nikoletta Szigeti, of Profession Services, said job ads appearing since 2024 show that, alongside English and German, French is the third and Italian is the fourth most sought-after language in the Hungarian market.
