Only half of scooters are insured

More than half of the 650,000-700,000 scooters on Hungarian roads lack mandatory third-party insurance, according to the independent insurance brokers association Fbamsz.

Despite legal requirements, data from the MNB show fewer than 296,000 policies in place.

A similar gap exists among e-scooters: of 50,000 now subject to insurance rules, only 10,000-15,000 are properly covered.

Under current regulations, any electric scooter weighing more than 25kg or capable of speeds above 25km/h must have insurance. The association attributed the low compliance to poor awareness.

The average annual premium for scooters costs Ft 8,000-10,000, but uninsured riders risk heavy fines and large personal liabilities in accidents.

The Fbamsz urged owners to get insured, noting that there is no retroactive penalty for late compliance.
