Auchan opens first AI-powered cashierless store

Retail chain Auchan has opened its first cashier-less store in Budapest after a Ft 100 million investment.
The compact 18m2 Auchan GO unit, located in the 11th District, near the Bikás park, offers 24/7 access and fully digital checkout via a mobile app.
Customers must download an app in order to make payments.
Auchan will not sell age-restricted goods such as alcohol in such shops, but will offer private-label products.
The retailer developed the store, a pilot project, in partnership with Hungarian tech start-up Kende Retail Operation, which provided the AI-powered camera and shelf sensor systems.
The IT infrastructure and automation of its first smart store was designed in such a way that the outlet can be integrated into the company’s IT systems, Auchan said.
Management will assess demand for round-the-clock, cashier-free shopping, a model gaining popularity in western Europe and the US, before deciding on opening further smart stores in Hungary.
