Banks agree to fee restraint under gov’t pressure

At the urging of both the government and the central bank, the Bank Association has encouraged its members to voluntarily review certain charges and offer fee reductions to customers, president of the organisation Levente Kovács said on Wednesday.
Retail banks, in response, have begun announcing fee concessions on current accounts and bank cards, he added.
In cases where banks have already introduced statutory inflation-linked fee increases for 2025, these will be offset through itemised refunds, permanent discounts, or equivalent compensation at the group level.
Banks have also committed not to pass on inflationary or internal cost pressures to retail customers before June 30, 2026, signalling a rare instance of co-ordinated sectoral restraint in support of household finances, Kovács remarked.
