Hepatitis A outbreak hits Hungary

Hungary is facing an outbreak of hepatitis A infections, with reported cases in January and February seven times higher than last year, according to the National Public Health and Pharmacy Centre.
The most affected areas are Budapest, along with Pest and Fejér counties, with further spread expected.
Health professionals are being urged to inform patients about the virus and prevention measures.
Hepatitis A is rare in developed countries but common in regions with poor hygiene and contaminated water.
The virus spreads through infected stool, contaminated food, and, in rare cases, sexual contact.
Vaccination is recommended for high-risk groups, including travellers to infected regions, those in poor sanitation areas, chronic hepatitis patients, and intravenous drug users.
