Stabbing seen as anti-Hungarian act

László Gubík, the president of Slovakia’s Hungarian Alliance party, said he is personally consulting with the Minister of the Interior after a man attacked a group of four people in Bratislava, who were speaking Hungarian, and cut one of them on the chin with a knife.

Gubík said such crimes may be a consequence of the anti-Hungarian rhetoric often heard in football stadiums.

The Hungarian government also reacted to the incident. Foreign affairs state secretary Levente Magyar said on Facebook: “The anti-Hungarian motive is being confirmed by more and more sources.”

He asked his Slovak counterpart Marek Estok for a full investigation of the February 28 incident, including possible motives. Estok assured Magyar that the Slovak police would do everything they could to catch the perpetrator.

Sources regularly consulted, with abbreviations used in text: Népszabadság (N); Magyar Hírlap (MH); Világgazdaság (VG); Napi Gazdaság (NG); Magyar Nemzet (MN); Népszava (Nsz); Kossuth Rádió news (KR); nightly TV news (TV).
