Bpest joins lawsuit over gas plant decontamination
Budapest mayor Gergely Karácsony announced that the city is joining a lawsuit against the state for failing to clean up the heavily polluted Óbuda Gas Plant site in the Third District.
State Energy company MVM, responsible for decontaminating 200,000 tons of toxic, carcinogenic waste, has repeatedly delayed action, according to Karácsony.
Environmental groups have been calling for cleanup efforts, but government officials have dismissed concerns.
Graphisoft Park, operating in the area, sued the state over its inaction, and Budapest is now joining the case as a property co-owner.
Karácsony emphasised that the site is even more polluted than the Rákosrendező area and that decontamination is necessary for future developments.
He criticised the government for neglecting the issue despite ample financial resources, stating that legal action is now the only option to ensure the cleanup.
