GVH finds Lidl labels misleading

Competition watchdog GVH fined Lidl Ft 186 million for misleading advertising, having concluded that the retail chain misled consumers by labelling products as "whole grain" when they contained too small a proportion of that ingredient.

The GVH emphasised that whole grain flour content must be at least 50% to qualify for using the label.

The misleading practice had been ongoing for several years and affected vulnerable consumer groups, according to the competition authority.

Lidl contested the fine, saying regulations only specify requirements for bread but not all bakery products and said the supplier had guaranteed the legality of the "whole grain" label.
