Trump comments have forint floundering

The forint continued to appreciate against major currencies on Thursday, bolstered by the prospects of peace in Ukraine after US President Donald Trump announced that he had had a telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The Hungarian currency reached a four-month high of 401 against the euro and a three-month high of 385 against the dollar.

The weakening of the dollar has also helped to boost economic sentiment, according to Portfolio.

However, the forint lost ground later on Thursday when Trump spoke of introducing new tariffs.

When he subsequently said that these tariffs would be postponed, the forint regained some value.
