City to clean up Rákosrendező area
The city of Budapest will find a way to allow anyone who wants to participate in cleaning up the Rákosrendező area – which is currently still in state hands and has been polluted with garbage for decades – whether they are cabinet ministers or the Fidesz leader on city council, mayor Gergely Karácsony wrote in a Facebook post on Wednesday.
He states that the largest pile of garbage in the area is the debris of the Budapest Sportcsarnok, which burned down on December 15, 1999, which he believes should be cleaned up by the state.
Karácsony points out that the “polluter pays” principal applies, and adds that at the time of the fire 26 years ago, the same prime minister was in power as now, but the remains of the building have not been touched since.
He said the city will clean up the area and give the rubbish to its owner, the state, as required by law.
