Wizz Air ready for rapid resumption of flights

Wizz Air is ready to restart flights to Ukraine within six weeks of a ceasefire announcement, CEO József Váradi of the discount airline told Reuters in an interview.

Váradi outlined plans to relaunch 30 routes initially and to fully reopen its bases in Kyiv and Lviv within six months.

Váradi said Wizz Air aimed to regain its pre-war market position of 10% in Ukraine, when it was the country’s third-largest airline.

Rival carrier Ryanair has also signalled plans to resume flights to Ukraine as fast as possible after the war ends, Portfolio adds.

Wizz Air issued a profit warning for the second time in six months in January, due to problems with engines, leading to the grounding of 20% of the fleet.

The airline expects 20% growth in capacity this year, supported by 50 new Airbus aircraft.
