Cancer mortality rate highest in Hungary

The per capita death rate in Hungary from cancer is the highest in the EU, according to a recent study issued by the European Commission on Monday.

The survey of all 27 EU member states, as well as Iceland and Norway, found that cancer fatalities in Hungary exceeded the EU average by nearly one-third in 2021.

Similar to other EU countries, the mortality rate for Hungarian men was significantly higher than for women, almost twice as high.

Moreover, it is “a cause for concern” that “risk factors for cancer occur with high frequency among both adults and adolescents,” the report observes, as “the prevalence of smoking, alcoholism and excess weight among Hungarians all exceed the EU average”.

While the proportion of obese adults decreased in the EU, in Hungary it increased to 58%.

Among the risk factors, Hungary is in the worst category for smoking and the lowest for fruit and vegetable consumption.
