Romania alarmed by MVM’s Russian connection
Romanian Energy Minister Sebastian Burduja again spoke out against Hungarian energy company MVM’s bid to buy the Romanian gas and electricity distributor subsidiary of Germany’s E.ON group, expressing concerns that the would-be buyer has too many links to Russia.
“The connections between the Hungarian state-owned MVM and the Russian Federation are evident”, as revealed by a thorough analysis, he said, as reported by Romania Insider.
An official investigation is examining the national security risk of the transaction, especially the threat of Russian intervention.
“Moreover,” Burduja added, “the contract of sale gives MVM the right to transfer the Romanian subsidiary to a third party, even one outside the EU”.
Even publicly available data is revealing, he said, as MVM buys gas from Gazprom and maintains close ties with Russia in the nuclear sector in Hungary’s Paks 2 project.
It is also suspicious that MVM appears to overvalue the target company, he said.
The minister added that the Foreign Direct Investment Review Committee, which operates under government oversight, has already been notified of this matter.
