Over 1,200 artworks on loan from Museum

The Museum of Fine Arts has transferred 1,293 works of art to state agencies, companies, and local governments, in line with a law permitting such loans with ministerial approval, website 24 reports.

While the National Museum, the Museum of Ethnography, and the Agricultural Museum declined to share data on loans, the Institute and Museum of Military History promised access later due to the volume of documents.

State and municipal institutions can borrow artworks without a loan fee, although they are typically responsible for transportation, storage, insurance, and other costs.

The loan period is generally limited to 15 years, with a possible five-year extension.

The largest borrower of artworks is the Office of the Parliament, with 518 pieces, followed by the directorate general for procurement and supply, responsible for ministerial offices, with 289 works.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs borrowed 110 pieces independently.

No artworks are on loan to private individuals.

However, one agricultural company from Komárom pays Ft 20,000 monthly for a loan from the Museum of Fine Arts.

The most valuable insured artwork is an 18th-century painting by Jakab Bogdány, valued at Ft 150 million, but the borrower remains undisclosed.
