Gazprom halts shipments via Ukraine
Russian natural gas exports via Ukraine to Europe ceased in the early morning hours of the New Year as the five-year transit contract has expired and the warring sides were unable to reach an agreement on how to continue the deliveries.
Ukrainian Energy Minister German Galushchenko described the cessation of the transit of Russian gas as an event of historic importance. Russia will lose its markets and will sustain financial losses, he said, as Europe has already decided to abandon Russian gas.
Russia continues to export gas to Central European clients, including Hungary and Serbia, via the TurkStream pipeline across the Black Sea.
A second TurkStream pipeline serves the Turkish market.
