Karácsony proposes confiscating cars

Budapest mayor Gergely Karácsony has proposed stricter penalties for dangerous speeding in Budapest, suggesting the temporary confiscation of vehicles for six months for the first offence and permanent confiscation for repeat offenders.

The proposal, inspired by Austria’s model, will be presented to the city council, he added.

In a Facebook video, Karácsony highlighted alarming data from new traffic cameras.

In one month, 52,926 speeding violations were recorded, including extreme cases of 158km/h in a 50km/h zone on Üllői Út and speeds above 140km/h on the Árpád Bridge, all incurring heavy fines.

Karácsony emphasised the need for harsher measures to deter reckless driving and improve road safety, in order to prevent fatal accidents in the city.
