GVH fines taxi firm for misleading ads

The competition watchdog GVH has fined taxi company City Taxi Ft 2 million for misleading advertising.

The company misled consumers by claim-ing it was the only Hungarian taxi operator in Budapest and that its "price guarantee" was a voluntary, unique offering.

Both claims were misleading, as taxi ser-vices are subject to statutory pricing rules.

City Taxi stopped the unlawful practice and co-operated with the GVH after the launch of the inquiry, leading to a reduction of the fine.

The GVH reiterated its guidance for busi-nesses to exercise caution in advertising claims. The Competition Office had identified a similar violation in the Budapest taxi market ten years ago.
