Russia drops Gazprombank restriction for payments

In response to the new US sanctions levied on Gazprombank on November 21, Russian President Vladimir Putin has modified the regulation that required foreign importers to open a rouble bank account with Gazprombank for natural gas purchase payments, opening up possibilities for solutions for purchasers including Hungary.

Hungary officially asked the US to provide an exemption from the sanction on Gazprombank on Wednesday.

However, US ambassador to Hungary David Pressman wrote on X on Thursday that “US sanctions on Gazprombank reaffirm our commitment to curtailing Russia’s ability to use the international financial system to conduct its war against Ukraine. We will continue to take all appropriate actions to promote accountability for those who enable or profit from Russia’s illegal war”.
