MNB-Nagy tensions resurface
The MNB has rejected accusations made by Economy Minister Márton Nagy, who alleged that central bank governor György Matolcsy sought to hinder his career after Nagy’s departure from the bank in 2020.
According to the MNB’s statement, Nagy’s resignation was not due to external pressure but stemmed from professional mistakes, an unsuitable leadership style, and behaviour deemed unworthy of a central banker.
The statement said Nagy had resigned voluntarily after being asked to leave by Matolcsy, and the MNB leadership took no further action regarding his career.
This counters Nagy’s claim to Index that Matolcsy actively discouraged other institutions from hiring him.
In a recent interview with the website, Nagy expressed hope for better co-operation between the government and the MNB, suggesting that a new central bank governor would greatly improve relations.
He acknowledged that the current situation between the two institutions is unusually bad.
Nagy credited Prime Minister Viktor Orbán for trusting him during this period of strained relations and said he hoped to have partially earned that trust through his work.
