Liberty Steel asks for gov’t assistance
Liberty Steel needs short-term support from the government and other stakeholders to restart production and manufacturing, the steelworks in Dunaújváros said on Saturday.
If this is not possible, negotiations with potential new investors will also be considered, the company added.
The Economy Ministry called on Liberty Steel on Thursday to pay wages in line with its legal obligations, after the temporary auditor assigned to subsidiary Duna Furnace said the company could not pay the employees for their work in October.
As a result, the employees are expected to be paid from the Wage Guarantee Fund, a possibility created by a government decree.
In that scenario, the Economy Ministry said, the companies owned by Liberty will be liquidated within a short time.
