Govt plans drastic rise in Airbnb tax

The government has initiated a compulsory social consultation on its proposed new regulation on short-term home rentals – primarily Airbnb – as part of the New Economic Policy Action Plan, the Economy Ministry said on Monday.

According to the bill, the annual flat tax for private accommodation in Budapest, unchanged for seven years, will be quadrupled from Ft 38,400 to Ft 150,000 per room starting from 2025.

In addition, the proposal introduces a two-year moratorium on registering new Airbnb apartment rentals in 2025 and 2026.

The tightening of regulations on short-term rentals does not affect rural settlements in any way.

Budapest has nearly 26,000 rooms devoted to private accommodation.

As a result, apartments of exactly the size that are sought by employees, students and young families looking for a rental apartment in the city have been squeezed out of the Budapest rental market.
