State may buy collection of Munkácsy paintings
Mária Schmidt, director of the House of Terror Museum, has denied a report that the government would buy a collection of works by 19th-century painter Mihály Munkácsy.
Discussions have taken place regarding the purchase of paintings and the creation of a Central European contemporary art museum, but no decision will be made this year.
Schmidt’s comments were in response to an article by 444, which reported that the MOL-New Europe Foundation (MÚEA) was considering buying Munkácsy’s works for over Ft 27 billion.
Schmidt, who is on MÚEA’s board, confirmed that no firm decision has been made.
Documents obtained by 444 indicate that efforts to acquire 73 Munkácsy paintings may have begun earlier this year.
This is not the first time the state has shown interest in the painter’s works, as Golgotha was purchased in 2019 from American-Hungarian Imre Pákh, the world’s largest Munkácsy collector, for Ft 3 billion.
The documents also mention plans for the MÚEA to establish a Central European contemporary art museum. The project would involve an investment of Ft 20-25 billion over five to six years, and the gallery would display 4,500 items upon opening.
