Fekete-Győr loses MP’s seat

The Capital Court of Appeals acting as a third instance court on Thursday convicted Momentum MP András Fekete-Győr on a charge of resorting to use of force against an official perpetrated as a co-actor in a group for throwing a smoke bomb towards a police line at a 2018 demonstration outside Parliament. The verdict is final.

Under the law, an MP who is convicted of committing a crime may not a remain an MP. Parliament will have to pronounce that officially.

Momentum announced subsequently that Fekete-Győr will not wait for the conflict of interest procedure but will pass on his MP’s mandate to Katalin Cseh, who lost her MEP’s seat in the European Parliament elections.

Several Momentum politicians and independent MP Ákos Hadházy said the judge and prosecutor should be ashamed of themselves.

Fekete-Győr was given a one-year prison term, suspended for two years.

Fekete-Győr said he is a victim of a frame-up by the prosecutor’s office led by Péter Polt, adding that the powers picked on him because of his party’s campaign against hosting the Olympics and the protests against the law on overtime work.

Fekete-Győr is continuing his career as head of the Momentum party foundation.
